PNG files
Lossless, with transparency. The right choice for screenshots, logos and anything with text or sharp edges in it; a poor one for photographs, where it produces very large files.

Tools that work on PNG
Hold ⌥ over a PNG instead of ⇧ and these appear. They change the file without changing its format.
What it keeps
- Lossless — converting into it does not degrade the image.
- Transparency — an alpha channel survives the conversion.
- Metadata — EXIF and similar fields are carried across, and the Strip Metadata tool can remove them.
Where the file goes
Beside the original, in the same folder, with the same name and a new extension. Nothing is overwritten and nothing is uploaded — see Privacy and permissions.
