# Third-party licences

Arazio bundles the components below. This file ships in the app's About window
and is the authoritative record of what is redistributed and under what terms.

**Nothing here is GPL.** Shipping GPL-licensed code inside a closed-source paid
application is a real legal exposure, and the FFmpeg project actively pursues
violators. The build asserts this rather than assuming it — see
`Scripts/build-ffmpeg.sh`, which fails if `enable-gpl`, `enable-nonfree`,
`libx264`, `libx265` or `libfdk` appear in the configuration.

## FFmpeg — LGPL 2.1 or later

**Version 9.0.1**, built from unmodified upstream source.

- Source: <https://ffmpeg.org/releases/ffmpeg-9.0.1.tar.xz>
- Licence text: <https://www.ffmpeg.org/legal.html>
- Reproduce this exact build: `Scripts/build-ffmpeg.sh 9.0.1`
- Exact configure line: `Vendor/ffmpeg/BUILD.md`

### How the LGPL obligations are met

| Obligation | How |
|---|---|
| Licence text supplied | This file, plus the About window |
| Source available | Unmodified upstream, version and URL above |
| User may substitute their own build | **Dynamically linked.** `libav*` / `libsw*` live in `Contents/Frameworks` and can be replaced. This is why the build is `--enable-shared`: static linking would oblige us to ship object files for relinking |
| Modifications disclosed | None. Upstream source, unpatched |
| Clearly identified as separate | `Contents/Helpers/ffmpeg`, `Contents/Helpers/ffprobe` |

### What is deliberately absent

- **x264 and x265.** Both GPL. H.264 and HEVC *encoding* comes from Apple's
  **VideoToolbox** instead — hardware-accelerated on Apple Silicon, so this is
  a performance gain rather than a compromise, and the patent licensing for the
  OS-provided encoder is Apple's.
- **libfdk_aac.** Not redistributable under terms compatible with this app.
  Apple's AudioToolbox AAC encoder (`aac_at`) is used instead, and is better
  than FFmpeg's native `aac`.
- **`--enable-nonfree`.** Produces a binary that cannot legally be
  redistributed at all under any circumstances.
- **Network protocols.** Built `--disable-network`, so the bundled binary
  physically cannot open a socket. The privacy claim is verifiable with
  `otool -L`, not merely asserted.

### Not yet included

These widen the catalogue when added, and the registry hides the affected
conversions until they are, so the app never advertises what it cannot do:

| Library | Licence | Enables |
|---|---|---|
| libmp3lame | LGPL 2.0+ | **MP3 output.** macOS has no MP3 encoder at all — Core Audio decodes MP3 but cannot produce it (Sprint 7) |
| libvpx | BSD-3 | VP8/VP9, so WebM output |
| libwebp | BSD-3 | WebP output; ImageIO reads WebP but cannot write it |
| libopus, libvorbis | BSD-3 | Opus and OGG output |

---

## Apple frameworks

Used under the Apple Developer Program Licence Agreement, not redistributed:
ImageIO, Core Graphics, Core Image, PDFKit, AVFoundation, **VideoToolbox**,
**AudioToolbox**, QuickLookThumbnailing, AppKit, SwiftUI.

---

## System libraries

Linked dynamically from the OS, not redistributed: `libz`, `libbz2`,
`libiconv`, `libSystem`.

## Verifying this file is accurate

```bash
# What the bundled binary reports about itself
build/Arazio.app/Contents/Helpers/ffmpeg -version
# Nothing GPL, nothing nonfree
build/Arazio.app/Contents/Helpers/ffmpeg -version | grep -E "gpl|nonfree|x264|x265"   # expect no output
# No network capability
build/Arazio.app/Contents/Helpers/ffmpeg -protocols | grep -E "^\s*(https?|tcp|udp|rtmp)$"  # expect no output
# Every library resolves inside the bundle
otool -L build/Arazio.app/Contents/Helpers/ffmpeg
```
