# Troubleshooting

## The ring does not appear

Nearly always Accessibility permission.

To see a modifier during a drag, an app has to be allowed to observe input
events, and macOS puts that behind **Accessibility**. Without it Arazio never
learns you pressed the key.

**System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility** — Arazio should be
listed with its switch on. If it is already on and the ring still does not
appear, switch it off and on again; macOS sometimes keeps a stale permission
after an app updates.

The other possibility is that Arazio is not running. It has no Dock icon, so
check the menu bar. [Launch at login](/docs/make-it-yours) saves asking this
question twice.

## The ring is empty

You are holding a modifier over a file that has nothing on that ring.

A `.sketch` has no conversions, so its formats ring is empty. A mixed selection
of a video and a spreadsheet has nothing in common, so the same applies.

Hold <kbd>⌃</kbd> instead — the actions ring works on anything at all.

## The converted file is not where I expected

By default it lands beside the original, with the same name and a new
extension. If you have set an output folder in
[Settings → Output](/docs/make-it-yours), it is there instead.

Arazio never overwrites. If a file of that name exists, it adds a number.

## Compressing did not make it smaller

If the file was already tight — a PDF with subset fonts and compressed images,
or a video that has already been through a good encoder — there is nothing left
to take, and Arazio returns the original rather than a larger copy.

On a **text** PDF, Arazio also discards its own work if the compressed version
does not render identically to the original. That is deliberate: the
alternative is a document that quietly draws the wrong glyphs.
[The full explanation](/docs/compress-a-pdf).

## One file in a batch failed

The others still converted. The usual cause is a file that is not what its
extension says — common with things downloaded from the web.

Opening it in Preview or QuickTime will usually confirm it: if they refuse it
too, the file is the problem.

## A video conversion is slow

It is re-encoding rather than remuxing, which means the codec inside could not
simply be moved to the new container. [Why that
happens](/docs/convert-video).

## It will not activate

See [Buy and activate](/docs/activate), which has the three usual causes.

## None of this

Email [support@arazioformac.com](mailto:support@arazioformac.com). Say which
macOS version, which Arazio version (menu bar → About), and what the file was.
